New York State: ‘Significant Threat’ At Maspeth Industrial Site

July 24, 2008 - An industrial site at the corner of 57th Street and Grand Avenue, in Maspeth, has been determined to contain contaminating chemicals, representing a “significant threat to public health and the environment,” according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

“What’s interesting is how slow the state moves,” the worker said, recalling that the soil samples had sat around for “about eight months.”

Likewise, at a residence located directly across 57th Street — little more than a crumbling, dead-end driveway — renter-occupants said they, too were unaware of concerns raised by the NYSDEC.
