Water Contamination in the North Pole

February 12, 2010 - Some North Pole private wells have sulfolane levels higher than new standards recommended by the federal government, but state officials say the guidelines were set low as a precaution.

Sulfolane is used in fuel refining. The Flint Hills Resources refinery in North Pole announced the contamination last fall, and an estimated 60 private wells are tainted, as well as the city's water system.
