Cancer Cluster at California Elementary School

June 9, 2010 - Parents are pushing for the Carlsbad Unified School Board to investigate what they believe is a cancer cluster at an elementary school.

More than 300 cancer cases have been reported within a three mile radius of Kelly Elementary School over the past 10 years. Several children have died, and many of the cancer patients attended or worked at the school.

Parents believe pesticide residue or overhead power lines are the cause. Wednesday night, they demanded the school board look into to the potential health hazard.

San Diego County health officials have launched a task force to investigate parents' concerns that the air, water and soil at the elementary school may be causing cancer in students.

Many schools across the country were built on or adjacent to closed dumps (landfills). Cancer clusters have been reported at some of these schools, including Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles. Before money is spent on testing of soil or water, historical research needs to be done to help determine previous land-use of the Kelly Elementary School property.

True! A report of historical usage data is available on any property in the United States at www.greenpropertyreport.com.

Historical research can also be done by anyone who doesn't choose to hire greenproperty.com for their services. The first thing to do is a 100-year title search of the property under investigation. Next, research old maps, including USGS topographic and Sanborns. By doing these two things one will have a good indication of previous land-use and what chemicals to test for.

Two of my sister-in-laws have died from cancer. One in her twenties and the other in her thirties. They grew up in Harbor City, CA with an oil well/pump right across the street. Does anyone else know of anyone living in the same area that have or had cancer? I know of three other families. But no one has investigated.

I bet it is for that. I live here too! I want to move from here. I have two little babies.I'm so frustrated to live here. there it is tons of oil companies and pump holes around. God bless you!

Dear friends at PITS,

How can one conduct a 100-year title search of a particular project?

I have been researching an area with known cancer clusters and will son be reporting, but would like more information before that happens.

Thank you.
