Community in Nebraska Deals with Nitrate in Drinking Water

September 10 - Residents of a peaceful place where children play tucked away in Sarpy County can't drink the water. That's the order the state slapped on the owner of the Sands Mobile Home Park after toxic levels of nitrate were found in the drinking water. Nitrate at unsafe levels can cause serious illness and even death in babies under the age of six months.

Nitrates may be just one of the chemicals contaminating Sands Mobile Home Park drinking water. In fact, this mobile home park may be on top of a old dumpsite. This statement is based on three facts:
1. Many mobile home parks across the country have been developed on top of closed dumps (landfills).
2. Gravel pits are often used as dumps after the earth is mined. As one pit fills with trash, concrete companies begin excavating another pit on adjacent property. CSR Wilson Concrete is across the street from Sands Mobile Home Park.
3. Years ago when there were few government regulations on waste disposal, chemical companies simply poured their wastes into gravel pits. And what's down the street from Sands Mobile Home Park....the closed Allied Chemical Company.
A title search of the mobile home park is needed to determine if residents are living on top of a toxic waste dump.
