July 25, 2008 - NEW BEDFORD — The citizens' group Wasted Away, which first raised questions years ago about the potential industrial pollution on the site of the Keith Middle School, is planning a public meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in City Hall to discuss the issue of houses targeted for taking by the city because of pollution problems.
The area of Keith Middle School and New Bedford High School was formerly a city burn dump where companies dumped and burned industrial waste for decades. Testing is continuing at houses built around the schools. Five on Ruggles and Greenwood streets have been identified as having serious enough contamination that city officials believe the most effective means of dealing with them is to tear the houses down and pave over the site.
