Discovery of contaminants delays Connecticut park project

April 3, 2008 - NEW BRITAIN — - Crews working on a park construction project on Willow Street discovered heavy metals and petroleum-based contaminants that pose no public health threat, the mayor said Wednesday.

There could be a closed dump (landfill) beneath the proposed park. If this is the case, the contamination is deep into the soil and would be a health threat, especially to children who have undeveloped immune systems. Most closed dumps contain cancer-causing chemicals. Before the Mayor of New Britain states the property is safe for a park, he needs to confirm that this land is not contaminated with carcinogenic chemicals left from past waste disposal on the property.
